Radiotherapy for cervical cancer: Chilean consensus of the Society of Radiation Oncology

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is a public health problem in Latin America. Radiotherapy plays a fundamental role both as definitive or adjuvant treatment. There are important intra and inter-country differences regarding access and availability of radiotherapy facilities in this region. The aim of a study was to standardize the basic clinical and technical criteria for the radiation treatment of patients with CC in Chile and provide a guide for Latin American Radiation Oncologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one expert radiation oncologists from the Chilean Radiation Oncology Society made a consensus using the Delphi methodology. RESULTS: There was a high degree of agreement for each of the recommendations. Those with the lowest percentage were related to the definition of the conformal 3D technique as the standard for definitive external radiotherapy (81%) and the criteria for extended nodal irradiation (85%). CONCLUSIONS: These recommendations present an updated guide for radiotherapy treatment of patients with cervical cancer for Latin America. Those should be implemented according to local resources of each institution.

Prof. Sophie Scott -Director, Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, UCL. Title: "Sound on the brain - insights from functional neuroimaging and neuroanatomy" Abstract In this talk I will use functional imaging and models of primate neuroanatomy to explore how sound is processed in the human brain. I will demonstrate that sound is represented cortically in different parallel streams. I will expand this to show how this can impact on the concept of auditory perception, which arguably incorporates multiple kinds of distinct perceptual processes. I will address the roles that subcortical processes play in this, and also the contributions from hemispheric asymmetries. Keynote 2: Prof. Gus Xia - Assistant Professor at NYU Shanghai Title: "Learning interpretable music representations: from human stupidity to artificial intelligence" Abstract Gus has been leading the Music X Lab in developing intelligent systems that help people better compose and learn music. In this talk, he will show us the importance of music representation for both humans and machines, and how to learn better music representations via the design of inductive bias. Once we got interpretable music representations, the potential applications are limitless

Historical biogeography of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico: a perspective from ferns (Monilophyta) and lycopods (Lycophyta)

Based on known data sets and maximum entropy distribution data of fern and lycopod species registered in the Yucatan Peninsula, track and parsimony analyses were undertaken to evaluate the contribution of these groups to the establishment of biogeographical relationships of the peninsula with other areas. The resulting generalized tracks clearly agree with the geological origin of the peninsula and the previously recognized relationship with the Greater Antilles is not supported for ferns and lycopods. Instead, a Central American generalized track connects the Yucatan Peninsula with southeastern Mexico and Central America. Floristically, the peninsula harbours 66 species of ferns and lycopods. Seven are registered for the first time in the Yucatan Peninsula and one is a new species for Mexico. These species do not follow the latitudinal pattern expected if ecological factors, such as humidity and rainfall, were the most important in determining their distributions. Groups of areas recognized with parsimony analysis of endemicity could not be defined as provinces as a result of the lack of endemic species. Nevertheless, a regionalization scheme based on maximum entropy distribution data and supported by track analyses is proposed. Two separate districts are recognized within the Yucatan Peninsula: arid/dry Yucatan in the north and El Peten (humid) in the south. Determinación de actividad antioxidante en frutas autóctonas disponibles en los principales mercados de la ciudad capital de Guatemala

Actualmente algunas enfermedades degenerativas como el cáncer y la ateroesclerosis, han sido asociadas con el efecto oxidativo ocasionado por la exposición prolongada a sustancias altamente energéticas conocidas como radicales libres (1-3). Estas especies son generadas como producto del metabolismo y tienen la característica de ser bastante reactivas electrones no apareados (1,4). Sistemas denominados antioxidantes tienen la capacidad de inhibir o retrasar el efecto oxidativo causado por los radicales libres, con lo que previenen el desarrollo de enfermedades degenerativas (5). El organismo humano cuenta de forma natural con enzimas que ejercen antioxidantes pueden obtenerse a través del consumo de alimentos como vegetales y frutas que han sido reportados como portadores de alfatocoferol, beta-caroteno y vitamina C, entre otros, cuya acción antioxidante ha sido comprobada (6). Existe un amplio número de investigaciones que han determinado la composición química de ciertos grupos alimenticios entre los que se incluyen las frutas; sin embargo en Guatemala no se ha realizado ningún estudio similar por lo que se desconoce la totalidad de la composición de algunas frutas, incluyendo la capacidad antioxidante de las mismas
